O’Neill collected the first reel separately from both of McFadden and Early, but each transcription is in C. The low C in Early’s version is impossible on D pipes, but there's a cylinder of the pair playing C pitched pipes and fiddle, so it's likely that the tune was transcribed from those instruments. Nick has known Tommy Reck’s version of The Curragh Races for years, but we’ve recently taken up McFadden’s very fiddly version. The Daisy Field is also from McFadden.

Nick's settings and playing of these old tunes on his instrument are just superb. When I first saw his track list I was shocked, He had found more tracks from Oscar and Malvina than I had in years of searching. This album remains a musical and academic delight! Wetootwaag

Absolutely sensational - love the generally low-end tones and planxty-esque set up, but most of all the incredible energy of it! Wish more instrumental trad was like this, love the fact that it's recorded live too. Prangman

Fiddle player Caitlin Finley played for us back in the day at the Coatesville Traditional Irish Music Series. It took a while to find out she’d made a CD with flute & piano (also piccolo, pipes & melodeon) accompaniment but it was worth the wait! Check it out. Will Woodson & Chris Stevens are standouts, too. It’s nice to find a contemporary Irish CD I like start to finish. Frank Dalton
