Alison learned this song as a teenager from a recording of Cathal McConnell, who said he got it from Len Graham. There are countless songs with this theme, many which are comical and cheerful, but this one is more sorrowful. In the verse where the woman is asked if she’ll leave her children for her lover, she replies “I will leave them all, for the one I love”. It’s both romantic and callous.

Nick's settings and playing of these old tunes on his instrument are just superb. When I first saw his track list I was shocked, He had found more tracks from Oscar and Malvina than I had in years of searching. This album remains a musical and academic delight! Wetootwaag

Absolutely sensational - love the generally low-end tones and planxty-esque set up, but most of all the incredible energy of it! Wish more instrumental trad was like this, love the fact that it's recorded live too. Prangman

Fiddle player Caitlin Finley played for us back in the day at the Coatesville Traditional Irish Music Series. It took a while to find out she’d made a CD with flute & piano (also piccolo, pipes & melodeon) accompaniment but it was worth the wait! Check it out. Will Woodson & Chris Stevens are standouts, too. It’s nice to find a contemporary Irish CD I like start to finish. Frank Dalton
